Dear Brother-in-law and my dear Sister,
I wish to let you know that I have arrived safely and if the weather
is good on Sunday, I am going to visit them. I hope Marcsa (Maria)
and company will also be home - I wrote to them that I am coming.
Kisses,
István
bognár
= copper, barrel maker, wheel maker, tuber, hopper, cartwright,
wheelwright.
The word "bognár" came into the Hungarian language
from the German word "Wagner". Wheelwright is "a
maker and repairer of wheels and wheeled vehicles; one who does
all of the work on the wooden vehicles" (the word goes back
to the thirteenth century). The wheelwright [or wheeler] was often
the village waggonwright [also known as a wainwright] as well, building
all of the wooden conveyances, from wheelbarrow to horse-drawn wagon.
